In the early hours of Sunday, Lagos State witnessed a series of devastating accidents along the Maryland axis. These incidents resulted in at least three fatalities and left several others injured.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the tragic outcomes through a statement from Nosa Okunbor, the agency's Head of Public Affairs. The first accident involved a diesel tanker that experienced brake failure. This malfunction led the tanker to crash into multiple vehicles, resulting in three deaths and injuries to several others.
Response and Additional Incident
LASEMA's response team arrived at the scene around 1:13 am, only to encounter another serious accident. This second crash involved a container truck that collided with a MACK truck. The driver of the container truck sustained a leg injury. Okunbor explained that the oil tanker, whose registration details are unknown, was fully loaded with diesel and its brake failure led to a collision with several other vehicles.
The second accident, caused by reckless driving and speeding, involved an articulated truck carrying a 40-foot container. Both the container truck and the MACK truck were not registered. This crash added to the chaos and disruption on the road.
Impact and Emergency Response
According to Okunbor, the three fatalities were confirmed, and several critically injured individuals had been rushed to nearby hospitals before the emergency teams arrived. The vehicles involved included two Volkswagen Vanagon buses, a Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and a Honda car.
Emergency responders, including LASEMA, the police, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked diligently to secure the area. They temporarily closed the road and bridge to recover the vehicles and manage the significant traffic disruption caused by these accidents.
God will continue to protect us.
