In a significant breakthrough, the Rivers State Police Command has successfully dismantled a child trafficking network.
The operation led to the rescue of 16 children and the arrest of a female suspect believed to be involved in the trafficking activities.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the police command, shared details about the rescue in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
According to her, the children were discovered in an estate located in the Ozuoba community within the Obio/Akpor local government area.
The rescue mission was prompted by a tip-off and subsequent intelligence work by the police.
“Our operatives acted swiftly in Ozuoba, following up on leads and gathering intelligence,” Iringe-Koko explained.
“We have managed to arrest one individual, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover any additional accomplices.”
Investigation and Community Concerns
The case has been handed over to the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Unit for further investigation.
The arrest follows growing concerns from the local community about the suspect, who was known for frequently bringing different children to her residence.
An eyewitness, identified as Faith, reported that the woman had been transporting children from nearby communities and churches.
“On Sunday, some locals questioned her about the presence of so many children, but she failed to provide a convincing explanation. This led them to alert the police,” Faith said.
Another source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the suspect had been living in a gated compound with numerous children for over two years, raising further suspicions about her activities.
