Kwara Polytechnic Students Urge Police Command to Take Action Over the Alleged Murder of Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen in Ilorin

Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen

The tragic murder of Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, has shaken the student community, leaving them demanding justice.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) has now given the state police command a 24-hour deadline to address their concerns regarding the incident.

Tensions Rising: Students’ Union Issues Ultimatum

In response to the killing allegedly carried out by a police officer in Ilorin, the SUG, led by its President Saheed Olalekan Ishola, held a press conference where they expressed their deep frustration.

The union emphasized that failure to meet their demands could result in an unyielding protest, as many students are pushing for peaceful demonstrations to seek justice for their fallen colleague.

Demands for Accountability

The Students’ Union has made it clear that they expect full transparency from the police.

They have specifically called for the public identification of the officer involved in the killing of the ND 2 student, Abdulqoyyum.

“We will not rest until our demands are met,” the union stated, making it known that they refuse to be intimidated or silenced, and they want their voices heard loud and clear.

The Police Response: Allegations of Harassment Continue

Adding to their frustrations, the students pointed out that less than 24 hours after the murder, other police officers were seen harassing and extorting young people on the same route.

According to the union, these innocent students were only targeted for looking youthful and well-dressed, a behavior that further fuels their discontent with the police force’s handling of young people.

A Delayed Response: Seeking Answers from Authorities

Despite a peaceful march to the state police headquarters, followed by discussions with top police officials and state representatives, the students say they are still waiting for concrete actions.

The union noted that while they were promised swift justice and efforts to prevent future incidents, the police have yet to publicly disclose any details about the officer responsible for the killing.

The Authorities’ Promise: Will Justice Be Served?

The tragic death of Abdulqoyyum has also drawn the attention of the polytechnic authorities, who stand united with the students in their demand for justice.

The state’s Police Commissioner, Victor Olaiya, has pledged to ensure that the ongoing investigation leads to justice for the slain student.

According to the commissioner, suspects and witnesses have been identified, and efforts are underway to ensure the culprits face the law.

The situation remains tense as the clock ticks on the SUG’s ultimatum. All eyes are on the police command to see if they will take the necessary steps to address the students' demands and ensure justice is served for Abdulqoyyum.
