Yankees Catcher Austin Wells Overcomes Injury to Make Key Defensive Plays and Contribute Offensively in 2-0 Victory Over Cubs at Wrigley Field

Yankees

In a dramatic turnaround, Yankees catcher Austin Wells showcased his resilience and skill despite a rough few days. Earlier this week, Wells’ hand took quite a hit, but it didn't stop him from shining on Saturday.

Crucial Plays Against the Cubs

On Saturday, Wells threw out two runners trying to steal second base, playing a key role in the Yankees' 2-0 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. His throws to second base were sharp and accurate, cutting down Nico Hoerner and Pete Crow-Armstrong in consecutive innings. Wells had missed Tuesday and Wednesday's games to recover from a bruised right hand, which he injured when hit by a fastball.

Improving Performance

Wells noted his progress, saying, "I feel like my throwing has gotten better each year as the season progresses. So, I started a bit earlier this year to ensure I was in good shape from the start." His commitment to improving his throwing arm has been evident, especially after criticism during his minor league days.

Manager’s Praise

Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Wells’ growth, emphasizing, "He’s made significant improvements in his throwing over the offseason, and it’s showing this year. Those were impressive throws. Clarke Schmidt also played a role with his quick deliveries and strategic pitches."

Wells’ Contribution Beyond Defense

In addition to his defensive prowess, Wells contributed offensively, going 1-for-3 with a walk and driving in the Yankees' first run of the game. Schmidt appreciated Wells' performance, acknowledging how his defensive efforts took some pressure off the pitcher.

Bullpen Update

Saturday also marked a boost for the Yankees' bullpen with the return of Ian Hamilton, who was activated off the 60-day injured list after a long recovery from a lat strain. Though Hamilton had been inconsistent earlier in the season, his return could provide a much-needed high-leverage option for the Yankees.

Roster Moves

To make space for Hamilton and Schmidt, the Yankees designated relievers Nick Burdi and Phil Bickford for assignment. Burdi, who showed promise in spring training, struggled after multiple injuries and couldn't secure a spot in the bullpen

Additionally, pitching prospect Clayton Beeter was activated from the injured list at Triple-A and moved to Double-A Somerset. Initially feared to need shoulder surgery, Beeter has managed to avoid that for now, giving hope for his continued development.
