Torrential floods submerge key institutions and neighborhoods in Maiduguri following Alau Dam failure

Torrential floods

In an unfortunate turn of events, a flood has forced many residents of Maiduguri in Borno State to flee their homes

The flooding occurred after the water channels at the Alau Dam collapsed on Tuesday, sending water rushing into the city.

The floodwaters wreaked havoc on the metropolis, submerging residential areas, major roads, and bridges

Several parts of the city have become unreachable due to the extent of the damage caused by the water.

Key locations such as parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital were heavily impacted by the flooding

Affected Areas: Institutions and Neighborhoods Hit Hard

Other areas that faced severe flooding include the GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, the College of Nursing, the College of Agriculture, and the School of Health Technology

These institutions and neighborhoods have been struggling to cope with the flood's effects, as the water continues to rise

Residents Evacuate: Youths Take Action

As the floodwaters moved in, many residents began evacuating their homes, taking with them essential belongings to safer parts of the city

In an effort to minimize damage, some young people in the affected neighborhoods have started placing sandbags around their homes to prevent the water from causing further destruction.

Government Response: Schools Closed for Two Weeks

Though the state government has yet to release any official numbers regarding casualties, they have already responded by ordering the closure of both public and private schools for the next two weeks

This decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff as the city grapples with the disaster.

Authorities Urge Caution: Evacuation Routes in Place

In the meantime, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, has urged residents to follow designated evacuation routes to stay safe

His message is clear: safety should be the top priority for everyone affected by the flooding.
