On Monday, a sudden and urgent meeting was called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja
This meeting came in response to a significant event: the arrest and detention of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
Tribune Media reported that Ajaero was taken into custody at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while he was en route to the United Kingdom for an important meeting.
NLC's Demands
According to a resolution from the emergency session obtained by Tribune Media, the NLC made some critical demands.
They insisted on Ajaero’s “immediate and unconditional release” by midnight on the same day
The union also called for a reversal of the recent increase in petrol prices, which had risen to N617 per litre.
In response to the situation, the NLC has put all its affiliates, state councils, civil society partners, and the Nigerian public on high alert.
Upcoming NEC Meeting
Adding to the urgency, the NLC has scheduled an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) for 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
