In a recent development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the release of its President, Joe Ajaero, from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
This information was made public by Benson Upah, NLC's head of information, as reported by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
Ajaero's release occurred late Monday night, after being held for several hours by the DSS.
Detained at Abuja Airport
The NLC President was apprehended by DSS personnel at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Ajaero was en route to the United Kingdom for a Trade Union Congress event when he was taken into custody by the secret police.
NLC's Ultimatum to the Federal Government
Prior to Ajaero's release, the NLC had issued an ultimatum, giving the federal government until Monday midnight to ensure his freedom.
His release was eventually confirmed at 11:10 PM, just ahead of the deadline.
SERAP Office Allegedly Targeted
In a related event, also reported that the DSS allegedly raided the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), further heightening tensions.
