The mother of a man named Nicolaas, who was filmed by Tom London lying dead at the Helen Joseph Hospital, has expressed her anger and sorrow over the terrible treatment her son received at the hospital.
Nicolaas was just 34 years old and passed away due to liver failure.
Cicilia van Burick, his mother, discovered her son's death through a Facebook Live video shared by Tom London.
Tom had been a patient at the same hospital and claimed that Nicolaas's body was left in the ward for hours, accumulating flies.
He also alleged that the hospital staff laughed after hearing about Nicolaas’s death.
In a heart-wrenching interview, Cicilia described the shock of seeing her son's body on social media before receiving any official notification from the hospital.
She further shared her distress at how the hospital staff treated her when she tried to claim her son's body.
She claimed that hospital staff would not release her son’s body without payment and that mortuary staff were unhelpful and unsympathetic, leaving her to assist in handling her son's body.
Tom London has used his platform to highlight the appalling conditions at Helen Joseph Hospital and promised to help cover Nicolaas's funeral expenses.
This incident has sparked a wave of complaints from other South Africans who have experienced similar mistreatment at the hospital.
Several commenters shared personal accounts of family members who suffered inhumane treatment, delays in medical attention, and even death at the hospital.
Despite these claims, Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has defended the hospital.
Nicolaas’s funeral is set for Thursday, 12 September, in Krugersdorp, with the community rallying to support his grieving family.
