Faith Ayegba Calls on Kogi State to Embrace Sustainable Agriculture Practices and Move Away from Chemical Inputs to Combat Climate Change and Food Insecurity

Faith Ayegba

In a recent press briefing held in Lokoja, Faith Ayegba, Project Director of the Cal-Maji Foundation, called for a bold shift in agricultural practices in Kogi State. She urged both the government and the local population to champion a vision of transforming the state into the organic capital of Nigeria and Africa.

This ambitious goal can be achieved through significant investments in regenerative agriculture, including agroecology and agroforestry.

Addressing Climate Challenges and Food Security

Ayegba highlighted the urgent need for Kogi State to tackle the increasing challenges posed by climate change, soil degradation, and food insecurity. She emphasized that food security is not just a distant concern but an immediate priority.

Recent data has shown a troubling rise in food insecurity and malnutrition, affecting the health and livelihoods of thousands.

The Need for Sustainable Agricultural Practices

According to Ayegba, the current agricultural methods in Kogi State, which heavily rely on chemical inputs and monocultures, are unsustainable. These practices deplete the soil, diminish biodiversity, and make the food system vulnerable to climate-related shocks.

She stressed the importance of protecting rural farmers from the risks associated with genetically modified (GM) seeds. Although GM seeds may offer higher yields, they often require specific chemicals and reduce crop diversity, which can weaken the resilience of farming systems.

Advocating for Organic Farming and Agroecology

Ayegba urged a shift towards practices that restore and sustain the land, protect the environment, and ensure that nutritious food is available to all.

She pointed out that investing in organic farming, agroecology, and agroforestry can provide numerous benefits, including improved soil health, biodiversity conservation, healthier food options, and enhanced economic opportunities.

Recommendations for Government and Community Action

In her address, Ayegba recommended that the Kogi State Government introduce policies to promote and incentivize organic farming and agroecological practices. She also called for investments in training programs for farmers, extension workers, and agricultural officers to better understand and implement these sustainable practices

A Call to Action for a Sustainable Future

“The time to act is now,” Ayegba stated. She emphasized that by adopting organic farming and regenerative agriculture, Kogi State has the potential to become a leader in sustainable agriculture, not just in Nigeria but across Africa.

She appealed to the government, private sector, and the people of Kogi State to unite in this transformative journey.

Together, she believes they can build a food-secure future that prioritizes health, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity.
